Natural Gas Pipeline Projects
As our customers’ natural gas demands continue to grow, We Energies is committed to providing cost-effective and reliable service. To ensure our customers’ have the natural gas capacity they need, we are building two natural gas laterals that will connect to the Guardian Pipeline.

Hartford-West Bend Lateral
To better serve the areas of greater Hartford and West Bend, we constructed 14 miles of needed natural gas pipeline capacity in Dodge and Washington counties. The project included 10 miles of pipeline through the towns of Rubicon and Hartford and four miles of pipeline through the towns of Hustisford, Jackson and Trenton. These two sections are connected through an existing distribution main, and will serve as the lateral connection for the area to the Guardian Pipeline.

We Energies began constructing the four miles of needed natural gas pipeline in the towns of Jackson and Trenton and the city of West Bend in February 2008. In April, We Energies began constructing the 10.5 miles of needed natural gas pipeline in the towns of Hustisford, Rubicon and Hartford. The construction and restoration activities are now complete on both sections.

Fox Valley Lateral
In the Fox Valley area, a 14-mile natural gas lateral was constructed to connect to the Guardian Pipeline. The lateral construction was completed in October 2008. It is anticipated that the pipeline will begin providing natural gas to the area in January 2009 when the Guardian Pipeline is operational.

Project Benefits
The lateral projects will benefit our customers and the communities we serve by:

  • Adding reliability to the natural gas distribution system.
  • Providing an additional source of natural gas supply for all We Energies’ customers.
  • Supporting economic growth by adding capacity to sustain business expansion.
  • Route Selection
We take many things into consideration when routing lateral pipeline including:

    • Safety
    • Natural resources and environmental features
    • Future land development
    • Agricultural lands
    • Construction requirements
    • Overall project cost

We also take into consideration where we can best use existing rights-of-way and easements to be as unobtrusive as possible to our affected customers. We work with the communities and regulatory agencies to determine the routes.

    Regulatory Approvals
In June 2007, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW)) issued a Certificate of Authority authorizing both projects and the final lateral routes.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) was also involved in the routing process, including issuing necessary environmental permits and approvals. The WDNR issued permits for the laterals in August 2007, as shown below.
